Explanation for Question 4 From the Writing Section on the 2018 May Sat

For question number four, we are choosing the appropriate word choice for 2 this situation. Um, right now the sentence reads, 3 it is also prolific the environmental protection agency estimates that the United States has 4 at least 10,000 closed municipal landfills. 5 And remember it here is referring to, 6 um, the land formerly used for garbage that's our subject 7 here. So the land formerly is for garbage is our it, 8 we see that the environmental protection agency estimates that there 9 are a lot of closed municipal landfills, 10 at least 10,000. So we're stressing the quantity here. 11 Um, so what of the answer choices stresses the quantity of 12 this land? That's going to be answered choice, 13 be abundant. There is a lot of it at least 10,000 close municipal landfills. 14 Um, our other answer choices. Prolific is not the right fit here. 15 Um, prolific doesn't stress, the quantity of land formerly used for garbage 16 that is available. 17 Uh, answer choice C magnanimous. 18 Isn't really a quality that we would use to describe 19 land magnanimous. Maybe as something we would, 20 we would use to describe a person or a person's actions, 21 not, um, this inanimate land answer choice D excessive, 22 um, excessive does describe a large quantity, 23 but it describes a quantity that is sort of too much in this case. 24 There's not any kind of assertion that this quantity is too much, 25 but rather we're stressing how widely available it is. 26 And therefore how applicable this idea of converting landfills 27 to parks actually is. So there's nothing really excessive about the amount of land. 28 Yes, there is a lot of it, but we're not going so far as 29 to say that there's too much in this paragraph. 30 So for that reason choice B abundant is our best option. 31 We see from the statistic that's provided by the EPA, 32 that there is a large amount of land, 33 formerly is for garbage. So it makes sense to say that it is abundant.
