Explanation for Question 19 From the Math (Calc) Section on the 2018 May Sat
Question 19 says of a hundred people who played a certain video game, 2 85 scored more than zero, but less than 10,000 points, 3 14 scored between 10,000 and a hundred thousand points. 4 And the remaining players, four to 5 million, 5 350,000 points, which of the following statements about the 6 mean and median of the a hundred scores is true. 7 So what we know here is we actually know that the mean is greater 8 than the median. So the answers a and the reason for that is because 9 the mean is an average of all of the numbers, 10 which means that this outlier of 5,350,000 is 11 going to make the mean significantly greater than what it would be without that 12 outlier. However, the median is just fine finding the middle point in the 13 dataset. So it's essentially crossing off the greatest and least, 14 uh, values in the data set until it finds the son, 15 the one in the center. And we know that that's going to be somewhere 16 between zero and 10,000 points because 85 of the participants 17 fall within that range. Therefore we know that the mean is going to be 18 significantly greater than the median and a is the correct answer.
