Explanation for Question 4 From the Math (Calc) Section on the 2018 March Sat
Question four says a political scientist wants to predict how the residents of New Jersey 2 will react to a new bill proposed in the state Senate, 3 which of the following study designs is most likely to provide reliable results for 4 the political scientists. So I'm going to go through each answer choice and talk 5 about why it's wrong. Starting with answer choice D so answer choice D 6 is wrong because the sample, 7 the people that are in the sample are randomly selected from the United States. 8 So they don't all live in New Jersey. And therefore that wouldn't be helpful to 9 predict how new Jerseyans would react. 10 Second, interviewing a group of students randomly selected from a large public university. 11 Well that's only selecting students. So those results are likely to be biased, 12 which is why C is incorrect. Then between a and B, 13 both samples include randomly selected samples. 14 And they're both from New Jersey. However, 15 sample B is sampling 300 randomly selected new hundred New Jersey 16 residents. Whereas sample a is only a sampling 200, 17 which is why B is going to produce more accurate results. 18 And therefore is the correct answer.
