Explanation for Question 30 From the Writing Section on the 2018 April Sat
Hey guys, question 30 is dealing with figuring out the tense when we're using 2 the word use in this sentence. Now, 3 overall, we know this entire passage is in the past tense. 4 This is talking about Johnson historical figure, and his designing of this dictionary in 5 the past. This has been says on the contrary Johnson blink the dictionary to 6 promote words he favored and to protest words he disliked. 7 So it seems like when we're talking about favored and disliked, 8 and, um, when he talking about terms like Johnson described in the next sentence, 9 we're talking in the past tense as in this is in the past tense 10 and historical. So we'll use an uses that's future tense, 11 and that uses this present tense. Now we're between had used a news, 12 our only two past tense options. The problem with had used is it's redundant. 13 If just to say had used, 14 is giving a double repeat of the fact that it's in the past used 15 implies that it was used in and of itself. 16 I don't want to say he had used just that he used, 17 so option a is the least redundant, 18 um, and is the most concise and just staying in the past tense Johnson.
