Explanation for Question 29 From the Writing Section on the 2017 May Sat
Question 29 asked us to choose the correct pronoun in this phrase. 2 Um, so we want to think what pronoun this non is replacing, 3 um, and to do that, let's three of the sentence and figure out what 4 should be so works of art. Could it be important to United States duty free, 5 but industrial materials were talks that rates of up to 40% of their purchase 6 value. So usually when we think about what non the pronoun 7 is replacing, we think about the last round that was mentioned before the pronoun. 8 In this case, we do have a known after, 9 but industrial materials. It's um, 10 the, the noun that there is replacing, 11 because we want to think there's an, a position that says it's what being 12 what's being taxed. So it was being tasked is industrial materials. 13 So that's why we know there goes to industrial materials. 14 Now I want to think if industrial materials is plural or singular, 15 we have materials with an S at the end. 16 So more than one materials, which is plural. 17 So let's look at our answer choices and think which one of these has 18 a plural, um, is a pro pronoun we have there, 19 which is a plural pronoun, but let's see B, 20 BC and D just in case it's, 21 um, it's not, clarel, 22 it's singular and it's actually possessive. 23 So we're going to cross that one out, cause we don't have a possessive, 24 um, oh, we do have possessive, but it's singular. 25 So it doesn't come. It doesn't, it's not correct. Then we have C once 26 purchase value again, not singular and then his again, 27 not singular. So there is the only plural pronoun 28 which would go with industrial materials.
