Explanation for Question 8 From the Math (No Calc) Section on the 2017 May Sat
Question eight, every Saturday, 2 Bob bakes, loaves of bread to sell at the farmer's market. 3 Each low below costs him $1 to make, 4 and he sells a low sprit, $3 each. 5 He also pays a vendor fee of 75 every Saturday to set 6 up his booth. What is the least number of loaves of 7 bread. Bob needs to sell every Saturday to cover the cost of the vendors 8 fee. So we want to, right. We want to find, 9 um, how many loaves of bread he has to sell to cover the cost 10 of the vendors fee. They tell us the vendor fee is $75. 11 So he needs to make $75 or more. 12 That's what we want to find out what the lobes he sells. 13 They also tell us how much it costs them to make a loaf and 14 how much he sells them for. And the amount of that he makes pro 15 loaf is the difference between what he sells it for and what 16 he pays or puts up front to make that low. 17 So if he receives $3 for each 18 lobe, but he had to spend $1 for each load, 19 that means that he spends two, 20 that he makes $2 per loaf. So if we want to 21 find out how many loaves he has to sell to surpass that 75, 22 we know that we're going to want to solve for the amount of low 23 CS to be greater than or equal to 75. 24 So if each one he gets us to, we can write 75 is less 25 than or equal to two X. Now, 26 all we need to do is solve for X. We divided by two on 27 both sides. Remember, it's not the calculator section, 28 so you can't use your calculator, but we do get, 29 um, that this is 37.5 is less than or equal to X. 30 So that means that X has to be greater than or equal to 37.5. 31 We can kind of write this in a way that makes a little bit 32 more sense to read. Um, 33 if we change the order and we see that we see X is greater 34 than or equal to 37.5. 35 So that means that X is either 37.5 or higher. 36 And the only answer choice that fits that is a 38.
