Explanation for Question 35 From the Math (Calc) Section on the 2017 May Sat
Question 35 says if the expression above, 2 which is X squared plus 17 X, the 66 over X plus six is 3 equivalent to an expression of the form X plus a where X is not 4 equal to negative six, what will be the value of a alright, 5 so we wanted to have this equation in the form X plus a, 6 which obviously it's not right now. So what I'm thinking is we're probably going 7 to have to factor the top part so that we can simplify the, 8 um, top and the bottom, maybe got rid of that X plus six. 9 We'll see. Um, but essentially just have it in the form X 10 plus a, so two back to the first part, 11 the top part, we need to buy no meals with our eggs in the 12 front, and we need two numbers that multiply to 66 and add 13 up to 17. 14 So the factors of 66 are one and 66, 15 which doesn't add up to 17. 16 We also have six and 11, 17 which we don't even have to keep going because that does add up to 18 17 everything's positive. 19 So we just have X plus six and X plus the 11. 20 Um, we can solve now. Um, 21 sorry. We can simplify. Now we have X plus six on the top 22 and on the bottom, those cancel out. 23 So we're left with X plus 11. 24 And if you check that it's in that format X plus 11 or X 25 plus a. So now they want to know what the value of is. 26 We have X plus 11 a is just 27 11.
