Explanation for Question 42 From the Writing Section on the 2017 April Sat

Question 42. If job shares have blank capabilities 2 or are unable to communicate effectively, the arrangement might not be successful. 3 So what we're talking about here is a word that maybe means, 4 um, unmatched or, 5 um, unalike or different, 6 uh, something to that effect. Something that describes how their capabilities are 7 not the same. They don't line up very well. So over answer choices, 8 the best fit here is going to be twice D mismatched. 9 Um, if they have mismatched capabilities makes the most sense, 10 and it gets the point across that their capabilities are sort of out of 11 line with each other, not quite the same, 12 and that would impede their ability to make this arrangement work, 13 uh, enter twice a discordant. 14 Um, doesn't really fit. We wouldn't really expect to see discordant used 15 in this context. Um, 16 we're really looking for something that speaks to the fit between their capabilities. 17 Um, choice, be contrary, again, 18 expresses a lack of coherence between their capabilities, 19 but it doesn't suggest how they fit together so we can eliminate it. 20 Uh, Tracy irreconcilable, 21 um, is maybe something we'd use in the context of, 22 for instance, irreconcilable differences. 23 Um, it wouldn't make sense to say irreconcilable capabilities, 24 reconcilable as a quite strong word. 25 Um, and it wouldn't make as much sense to use in the context of 26 capabilities. It might be used maybe, 27 um, in terms of a stronger context. 28 So we can eliminate choice C as well and select choice D mismatched, 29 which is the best answer because it speaks to the fit between their capabilities 30 and how they line up.
