Explanation for Question 32 From the Writing Section on the 2017 April Sat

Question number 32, the sentence currently reads starting 2 on this previous page. After meeting with city officials and 3 prominent citizens, the members agreed that the statue should instead stand outside of Florence's 4 town hall as a symbol and representation of the city strength and independence. 5 So what we see here is symbol and representation, 6 which kind of have a very similar meaning in this context. 7 Um, symbol generally means a representation. 8 Um, something that's a representation could be considered a symbol. 9 So it doesn't make sense to include both words here. 10 We wouldn't want to say symbol and representation when one word would do the 11 trick. Um, and as a general rule, the sat likes to test to make 12 sure that you can write sentences as concisely as possible. 13 So you never want to use more words when fewer words would still get 14 your point across. So looking at our answer choices, 15 many of these will have something that's redundant about them. 16 Well, we'll pick the most concise answer twice. 17 So choice a is eliminated choice B to symbolize and represent. 18 Again, uses both words, choice C as a symbol of as brief, 19 and it cuts that word represent, um, 20 making the description a little bit more concise and choice D a representation 21 that symbolized again, unnecessarily wording and redundant. 22 So choice C is our best answer here. 23 There's no need to include the word representation in any form because symbol kind 24 of already conveys the same meaning.
