[Video] Q48: As used in line 32, "handle" most nearly means

Explanation for Question 48 From the Reading Section on the 2017 April Sat

Question number 48 is a vocabulary and context question here we are looking 2 at the word handle in line 32. 3 So let's take a look back at how this word is actually used in 4 context. So I had 32 is, 5 uh, here in the passage, the bottom of this first column, 6 um, we're talking about being tough enough. 7 I'm strong enough to handle that setting. 8 So this idea of handle that setting generally just means in order to tolerate 9 or, um, or, 10 or survive that setting. Um, 11 this is kind of in the context of the structure of the seaweed and 12 its properties and what makes it kind of have this ability of existing 13 in such a, such a challenging setting where the waves are pummeling the algae, 14 and there's, there's really intense forces kind of threatening to break it apart, 15 but because of its properties, it's able to stay together and stay alive. 16 Um, so looking at our answer choices choice, 17 I says, train for, um, 18 remember our subject here is the algae or seaweed. 19 So it doesn't make sense to say they would be training. 20 That may be is not the right verb, answer choice B survival is exactly 21 correct. Um, they're able to survive and that's kind of what we're 22 learning about these properties. That's, what's enabling them to survive. 23 So answer Tracy engage in again, 24 this verb, um, doesn't really make sense. 25 That's not a very, we would tend to use with a non-human subject. 26 Um, that looks like a common theme for this question. 27 Make sure that when you're talking about an inanimate object, 28 you're using verbs, that kind of make sense for an inanimate object rather than 29 verbs that we would use with people. Um, 30 so C is out and choice D act on, 31 um, again, the CME doesn't really acting on anything. 32 It's just the properties that are helping it to survive. 33 So answer choice B is our best answer here.
